Here are somethings you can do now if you want to get a jump start on relocation.
1: Download Signal , an encrypted messaging app that keeps communication secure and private.
Signal requires the use of a phone number and requires internet connection
Signal functions like a texting app with some extra functionality for groups
Once you download signal we recommend setting a passcode on the app in the in-app security settings to insure that only you can access the conversation
Why do we use Signal? How do we use signal?
We use signal to keep you in real time contact with a small team of volunteer case workers who will use their free time to answer questions and help you make plans.
Depending on the sensitivity of our communications we may enable disappearing messages on signal so that after a set time the information will disappear. Feel free to take notes but please avoid taking screenshots of chats.
2: Research Carbondale Illinois so that you can ask questions about what you found.
Look into LGBTQ+ organizations and groups like Rainbow Cafe, Golden Rainbows of Illinois South, Downstate Illinois Trans Organization, or Southern Illinois Pride in Action.
Check out Carbondale.info to see the community events that progressive groups host.
Look at the Illinois Secretary of State Office to see if you need to get copies of any documents prior to relocation so that you can get Illinois issued documentation upon arrival.
3: Consider how your budget and your particular circumstances could impact relocation.
When do you want to relocate?
How much stuff do you need to move?
What is the most you can spend on certain monthly expenses?
What jobs are you interested in applying for?
Can you end a lease early or list a house soon?
